Laser for Shingles: Is it Safe for Children?

Shingles is a painful, blistering skin condition caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus in a person's body. Many people associate shingles with adults over 50, but it can also occur in children. Whether or not to recommend laser treatment for shingles in children is a decision that requires careful consideration by the doctor and parents.

Laser treatments offer a non-invasive option to treat shingles and can reduce scabbing and healing time; however, this type of treatment is not always necessary since most cases of shingles in children tend to resolve on their own. In many situations, topical, antiviral medications are all that are required for successful treatment and relief from pain associated with shingles.

Furthermore, these medications can be used even if an outbreak has already begun. Ultimately, both medical professionals and parents should weigh the pros and cons of laser treatments as an option for treating shingles in children prior to making any decisions.

In some cases, laser therapies might be beneficial; however, due to recent studies that have noted adverse effects resulting from this type of treatment they should only be used as a last resort when other options have proven unsuccessful.

When it comes to care decisions regarding child’s health, the most important thing is to utilize all available knowledge and resources before deciding on which course of action would best suit your child's circumstances.
